Healthy habits for a healthy Ramadan

The holy month of Ramadan is upon us once again, and with it, comes a time of self-reflection, physical fasting, and community gathering.

During this blessed month, it's important to be extra mindful and careful with the food choices we make and the lifestyle we lead. Through this cleanse period, we can rid our bodies of toxins and become closer to God by acts of worship, prayer, and meditation.

It can be difficult for some to keep the right mindset throughout the month, and we want to help bring awareness to some key tips that can lead to a more healthy lifestyle.

Hydration

It's important to stay adequately hydrated during Ramadan, especially in hot weather. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, such as water and unsweetened juices, during Suhoor and Iftar. Avoiding caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration, is also a good idea.

Eat mindfully

Make sure you're eating a well-balanced, healthy diet throughout the day. When you break your fast at Iftar, start with lighter foods such as soup or salad. Eat complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and vegetables for sustained energy throughout the day. And be sure to get enough protein from lean sources such as chicken, fish, tofu or legumes.

Rest and sleep

During Ramadan, it's essential to get enough sleep to function properly. It can be tempting to stay up late praying or socialising with friends and family, but your body needs rest in order to function at its best. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night to make sure your body has enough time to rest and recharge.
